Autobiographical fiction. That’s how Jana Mila describes her songs. The 23-year-old Amsterdam native is likeable, chatty, gifted and fun, but don’t be fooled: there’s a lot of depth beneath the surface here. Thankfully this fuels her songwriting, as she seems to stem from that rare breed of singer-songwriters who are consistently productive. Listening to her beautiful songs we get to witness Jana figuring out what’s going inside herself and the world around her. Her melodies are hooky, and her grooves are infective. She can simultaneously sound both melancholic and cheerful. Think: Kacey Musgraves meets Madison Cunningham with a touch of Carly and Joni thrown in.
